Fashion designing is the profession that give much emphasis on several required skills instead of qualification. A college degree is also necessary but it is secondary; priority is given to the skill set that is crucial for this field. Here are some skills that you must have to earn a fame of successful fashion designer:
Ability to sketch is one of the most basic skills required for a fashion designer as design of new clothing is always drawn hence, sketching work as a blue print of the final product.
A great taste for colors is also necessary to combine color shades with different textures and materials to express a thought process in their creation. A proper understanding of color, color arrangements and how to apply them to a sketch is very crucial for a fashion designer.
Fashion designers must know how to sew though they are not supposed to do sewing yet they must be familiar with all the sewing techniques as they have to interface with workers who will be doing the sewing. The knowledge helps the designers to understand which technique will be most efficient at bringing their designs to fruition.
They should have an overall knowledge about fabrics and their draping qualities, material, weaving styles etc.
Fashion designers who are familiar with computer-aided design programs are much in demand as it is being used more and more in the fashion design industry. Though most designers first sketch designs by hand, an increasing percentage also shift these hand sketches to the computer. CAD allow the designers to view designs of clothing on virtual models and in a variety of colors and shapes which save time by avoiding to create new sketches only to bring fewer changes.
Creativity and an eye for detail is also very important to create a unique piece of design.
The other soft skills that a designer must be the master of are excellent communication skills, fashion consciousness, market awareness along with awareness about consumer's preferences are important.
