Dyers in the country's knitwear hub of Tirupur, where about 700 units have remained closed following a court order over non implementation of pollution norms, are now a relieved lot as the Eco Green Industrial Evaporator developed by NIFT-TEA Knitwear Institute has been certified as viable by IIT, Madras. Facing problem in finding proper technologies to achieve stipulated Zero Liquid Discharge in effluent treatment, the units are pinning hopes on the evaporator, a possible viable alternative to mechanical evaporators to treat discharge from Reverse Osmosis process in treatment plants to achieve ZLD. A press release from the Tirupur-based institute claimed ambient air quality parameters was found to be excellent after using the gadget. Cost of recovering salts from rejects from RO was also much less than mechanical evaporators and fuel consumption was also less. This German technology could be used by dyers in place of mechanical evaporators, which had caused pollution while discharging effluents, it said, adding that EGIE natural evaporator, under Green Textile Movement, had already been tested in a unit in Tirupur. IIT-M had examined the system before certifying it as viable alternative, it said. Made of a wooden structure, EGIE was almost maintenance free, unlike mechanical ones, made of complex mechanical and civil structures, which need regular maintenance, the release said. NIFT-TEA suggested that the industry provide alternative arrangements for treatment during rainy days, when humidity it high. If industry adopted the system, the salt recovered should be either reused or stored properly and random monitoring of air quality should be carried out to ensure adherence to stipulated standards, the institute said.
