It’s the creators themselves, rather than the creations, that sets apart the exhibition of crafts and paintings, going on at Museum auditorium, from the other craft exhibitions that frequent the city.
For, all hands that gave shape to those exquisite art forms that are on display belong to women, that too of all ages. The visitors would even be stunned to know that most of these artists are just amateurs who have just started learning the art. The exhibition, organised by the Continuing Education Sub-Centre of the Government Women’s College, Vazhuthacaud, displays the works of the students and teachers at the Centre.
It is for the first time that the coordinators of the Continuing Education Sub-Centre have decided to come out of the four walls of their campus and exhibit the works of their students for the general public.
But, to their surprise, the two-day exhibition has managed to garner overwhelming reviews from the visitors on the first day itself on Monday. ‘’Several visitors told us that they were willing to buy our products. But since we are not prepared with enough stock, we had to refuse their offers politely,’’ says Anita S Nair, who teaches painting and crafts at the centre, pointing towards the splendid collection of trendy ornaments made of coconut shells and also the attractive hand-knit curtains and sarees with mural paintings etched on them. Dharmaja, manager of the Continuing Education Sub-Centre, said that they will be organising a four-day exhibition-cum-sale of their products at the college from May 19 to 22 in view of the overwhelming demand.
The Continuing Education Sub-Centre offers courses in over 200 subjects, including computer courses, beauty therapy, fashion designing, embroidery, accounting, stitching, painting and mural screen printing.
