After many years wishing for more traditional Southern food in Boston, Executive Chef and Owner Jason Cheek drew from his North Carolina roots to create Southern Proper - a nostalgic experience inspired by his upbringing. From housemade pickles, fermented hot sauce and lavender-infused honey, to smoked meats, Lowcountry-style seafood and legendary fried chicken, Executive Chef Jason is providing guests with a taste of home. A carefully curated drink menu is equally weighted, with local brews on tap; an extensive whiskey, rye and bourbon list; and innovative cocktails. Local partnerships, full utilization of ingredients and sustainability are highly prioritized by the team, with measures in place to maximize impact. Southern Proper sources fresh, local ingredients from New England farms to further emphasize the seasonal culture of southern food. Compost is refrigerated to reduce footprint, and when an ingredient is about to go out of season, it’s dried up or pickled to ensure full utilization; nothing is wasted. In addition to the authentic dishes and drinks, Southern Proper has a unique visual experience. With the comfort and appeal of “grandmother’s living room,” Southern Proper is dressed in thoughtful nods to a southern home. It’s relaxed, inviting and slightly eclectic, with antique wallpaper and light fixtures, green and gold accents, and smoke-infused, raw pine walls imported from North Carolina. Natural light seeps in from floor to high-vaulted ceiling spanning the perimeter, and the kitchen is open. Whether grabbing a quick, on-the-go lunch or unwinding with post-work cocktails, Southern Proper welcomes Boston into its home for a traditional southern experience.

Here's what people say after redeeming their Nift gift.
The place was delicious and such a cute atmosphere! Definitely wouldn’t have found the place without nift
Wonderful food in a different type of atmosphere. Inspired menu with delicious options for vegetariants too.
Service wasn't so great, and the food was average. I had the smothered and covered hashbrowns. It just didn't mesh, too much going on that didn't go together, but the hashbrown was delish.
Fried chicken was great!
Best friend chicken in Boston
Enjoyed our meal, the quiche was served a bit on the cold side which I didn't mind but had to ask first if that was intentional or a mistake. Might be worth highlighting that on the menu. I didn't mind it cold but I would expect most people think of quiche as a hot dish.
Amazing comfort food and super cozy Setting
Food was excellent great service and ambience too.
Had a very nice lunch and enjoyed discovering this year-old restaurant. One in the party was vegetarian and tho the menu focused on meat there were several veg options.
I enjoyed the meal at Southern Proper. Foods are fantastic and delicious. Thank you for referring me to a restaurant that I did not know that exists. I will come back again. 🦃🍁
The food is absolutely delicious but the prices are super high especially when entrees like fried chicken don't come with anything but the chicken. If we're pieces for 23 bucks or so should come with a side dish or two. this is southern food ladies and gentlemen home cooking with simple ingredients!
The burger was great. Service was friendly and decor was very modern. Price is as to be expected for the south end.
Nice atmosphere, good service and tasty (but pretty unhealthy) comfort food
A little pricey
Good service, chicken was good
Amazing food and great atmosphere
The food was great. Highly recommend the hot chicken sandwich. Loved the atmosphere as well
Food & cocktails were really wonderful!! Service was a bit slow, but didn't color the evening for us. Would love to see the dessert menu elevated to the level of execution of the main menu. Would definitely go back!
I LOVE the atmosphere and decor in Southern Proper! Although the menu, especially for lunch, is very limited, it looks a bit better for dinner. I will definitely return!
Very nice place to eat,drink..excellent decoration..great customer service...
The restaurant’s ambience is very nice, nice neighborhood spot. The food was good. We went on a Wednesday evening , the restaurant was not crowded but service was extremely slow.
Delicious food, great service, and gorgeous venue! Thanks so much!
Great food, okay service. Surprisingly not busy on a Friday night
It was good, I'd go back again. Didn't think it was amazing. Just okay.
The ambience is really nice and the hood is definitely a new experience!
Went for Brunch....The Frittata was Great
Good food and nice atmosphere
it's cool and cheap. I highly recommend to all my friends.
Enjoyed the food and drinks! Was a little pricey for the quality.
It was amazing!
Great food service was mah tho
Nice atmosphere and waitstaff.
Great service and food!!
Food was incredible, atmosphere was great - love the decor! Restaurant appreciation fee was a surprise. I'd recommend but tell friends to expect the additional fee.
A little pricy but so yummy will def be back
The restaurant is spacious and homey. I enjoyed my Farmer's Salad and got a side order of corn bread. It came with honey and a scoop of butter. Since it was very sweet and dessert-ish, I left it for the end of my meal. I don't eat chicken so couldn't try the 3 (I assume) popular dishes. I had gone to an event and remember eating a pimento sammie. I wish they had something like that on the menu.
Really great food, happy I discovered the resteraunt and looking forward to returning with friends.
The decor is rustic and high quality at the same time. The price for my food was very reasonable, and the presentation was well balanced. The meat was absolutely excellent. The menu itself was limited. Cleanliness was top notch, as it better be on rough wood top walls.
Food was great but the service was a little slow for a night when they weren't even half full.
Yummy food and good service!
I'm from the South and felt right at home at Southern Proper. Thank you for bringing this restaurant to Boston!
The food is actually pretty delicious, but the portions are petite. You will need to order at least 2 things so that you are not hungry.
The fried chicken was amazing!
Biscuits were dramatically overpriced - good quality but size/portion did not warrant $7 (benchmarking against the size of biscuits at a place like Sweet Cheeks). Fried chicken sandwich (classic) was tasty. Very friendly bartender and quick service. Love the decor of the place, wish it was open later!
Great menu/drink menu and overall vibes. We had the Chicken Sandwich and it was delicious!
The hot chicken was on 🔥
Great food! Thanks!
We had a very nice experience, liked the atmosphere, the bar staff was super friendly + made recommendations from the menu that we loved. The catfish dinner + brussel sprouts were our favorites + the zucchini hoe cakes with maple syrup + peanuts were a delicious treat as well.
Great service food and atmosphere fun place!
Amazing fried chicken!!
The warm beets had too much sea salt on top. Waitress asked and gave me a new plate. The smoked sausage served with pickles was good. Service was good.
The food was amazing! Definitely one of the best southern restaurants I have been to in a while. I really enjoyed that there was a great variety of southern options - barbecue, meats, seafood, and salads! The best part was that they all have a touch of southern to them. I would highly recommend this place!
Great brunch & great service. Thanks!
We went during crush hour and the wings were delicious! Going back next week!
